Topic: A New Man (III)

Date: Friday, December 10, 2021

Read: Colossians 3:1-17

Colossians 3:1-17  If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

For ye are dead, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

MEMORISE: Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds (Colossians 3:9)

EXPOSITION

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. After the creation, He looked and saw that all was good. In the process of time, sin came in, and one of the simplest sins ever is “Lying.” Lie is a powerful determinant that distinguishes the saved from the unsaved. Many Christians see lie as part of life. Some even give types of lies as holy lies and unholy lies. All of these are deceits of the devil to distract the children of God from living a perfect holy life. Are you not a victim of lies?

The simple way to describe lie is to say it is any deliberate attempt to deceive through false statement. One of the most widely accepted definition of lying is: “A lie is a statement made by one who does not believe it with the intention that someone else shall be led to believe it” (lsenberg 1973). It is also making a statement believed to be false, with the intention of getting another to accept it as true” (Primoratz 1984). Someone says it is being diplomatic. It should not be found among the children of God.

Deceit is Satan’s weapon that he uses to trap man. Of course, he is the father of lies – the chief pathological liar (Jn. 8:44). If we will portray the image of God as a community of Christ-made new men/women to our society, we must not lie to one another, for it is contrary to both the law of truth and the law of love. It is both unjust and unkind, and naturally tends to destroy all faith and friendship among mankind.

Lying makes us like the devil (who is the father of lies), and is a prime part of the devil’s image upon men’s souls, and therefore, we are cautioned against this sin. Anyone that is in Christ must do away with the things of the devil and focus on those of God. Lying makes us slaves of Satan and sin, because the root of so many sins begins with lying. Lying always comes with series of sins, but the end is destruction. It is not God’s will that we should be destroyed. He who chooses to lie with impunity is on his way to destruction. Choose life in Christ, the Truth, now and forever.

PRAYER POINTS

1. My Father, deliver me from the spirit and bondage of lying and lies.

2. Lord, help me to know the truth and say it everywhere, always.

3. Pray against the spirit of deceit causing distrust among brethren today, to the extent that some brethren prefer employing unbelievers than their fellow church members.
