CONVENTION STORY
A Case Study In An Irrevocable Covenant
The major reason: The Redeemed Christian Church of God is unarguably successful as a result of God’s faithfulness to His covenant, coupled with Papa Akindayomi’s and Adeboye’s obedience to God and walking in holiness.
Born into a family of idol worshippers in July 1909 in pre-colonial Ondo, Rev Akindayomi sought the Lord early, and by 18years, he was baptized in the CMS church (The Anglican Church). Four years later, he joined the Cherubim and the Seraphim Church. Rev Akindayomi started hearing God’s voice in the C&S church but for some reasons, he ignored it and got busy with his business ventures which became unproductive after much effort. It was at this time he realized he had to take God’s calling seriously.
Pa Akindayomi asked God to confirm His word (Call) with signs which God did. The Lord assured him that He would provide for all his needs as he would receive no salary nor do business from then on. The word of God comforted him. He got married to Sis Esther Egbedire in 1941 at Cherubim and Seraphim Church.
He however observed that the Church was departing from the true word of God in some practices and doctrine which made him leave. In 1952, Rev Akindayomi started Egbe ogo Oluwa with seven foundation members. God divinely gave him the name “The Redeemed Christian Church of God”. The Lord told him that RCCG would take the world and that He will fulfill His part of the Covenant.
He obeyed God and kept to the covenant, including who the successor should be. The would – be-successor, Enoch Adeboye was invited to the Headquarter of the church in 1973 by his uncle Chris Fajemirokun. Rev Akindayomi announced that his successor has arrived, when Adeboye came into the church as a first timer. Rev. Akindayomi and a couple of other ministers followed up on Bro. Adeboye that same day. Pastor Adeboye started as an interpreter for Rev Akindayomi and by 1975, he was ordained a full Pastor. Adeboye and his wife initially resisted the ordination saying that “the Church was carrying it too far”
In 1979, Pastor Adeboye accompanied Rev Akindayomi to a conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma USA where the word of knowledge came from America preacher that RCCG would go to different parts of the world and that Jesus would meet the church at his second coming. This was a confirmation of what God had earlier told Rev. Akindayomi. In the evening, at their Hotel Rev. Akindayomi told Pastor Adeboye that he was God’s choice as his successor. Adeboye asked those present to pray so that God could change his mind. Pastor Adeboye preferred to become the youngest vice-Chancellor in the country or perhaps in Africa.
They prayed so much that night, the hotel building shook that the hotel authority thought it was the electronic equipment that caused it and told them to stop.
Rev. Akindayomi and Pastor Adeboye are two of a type-broken Christians, pure, holy and obedient. Rev. Akindayomi went to glory in November 1980. By January 1981, Pastor Adeboye, a former senior lecturer in mathematics at the University of Lagos and later University of Ilorin took over 39 parishes of RCCG.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God is today, in over 175 countries, at last count, a total of 20,000 parishes around the globe. In major nations of the world, RCCG has a voice.
Three events that helped Pastor Adeboye’s tenure are the establishment of Model parishes which began in 1988 and the Holy Ghost Service (HGS) which started in 1985 and missions to foreign countries.
RCCG’S Social Responsibility policy is demonstrated by the establishment of micro ministries like RAPAC – to rehabilitate HIV/AIDS patients, CADAM – to rehabilitate drug addiction, HERITAGE HOME – habitation of hope for the homeless. Many of such children have graduated from the university; many more have learnt one vocational work or the other.
Three annual events bring millions of people together at the Redemption Camp from different parts of the world. These are the March special Holy Ghost Service, the August annual Convention and the December Holy Ghost Congress. Festival of life holds in London twice a year (April & October) and in Canada, USA, Paris, Northern Ireland and South Africa to mention a few. Our prayer is that God will continue to grand Daddy Adeboye greater anointing, more grace and God’s strength to him in Jesus name. Amen.
