Topic: For His Glory Alone
TEXT: NEHEMIAH 3:1-5
Key Verse: “Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests, and they builded the sheep gate; they sanctified it, and set up the doors of it; even unto the tower of Meah they sanctified it, unto the tower of Hananeel” (Nehemiah 3:1).
“N adversity, but if you wantearly all men can stand to test a man’s character give him power” - Abraham Lincoln. It is either such power intoxicates and does more harm than good, or it is wisely used for the greatest good of the greatest number.
Nehemiah worked in Shushan as a personal assistant to the king of the vast Medo-Persian Empire. When he heard about the dilapidated state of walls and gates of Jerusalem, he obtained permission from the king and proceeded to Jerusalem to be personally involved in the work. Jerusalem was a large city with a network of roads and many gates that allowed easy flow of traffic. In times of peace, the city gates were a beehive of activities and commerce.
The volume of work required everyone to be involved. However, the Tekoites, lazy as they were, could be of no help. They watched their brethren work tirelessly to rebuild the walls while they preferred to loaf around aimlessly. Are there not such people in the nation, church or family who prefer to do nothing while others are at their duty posts?
The Scripture enjoins that “whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might”. There is work for everyone in the church or even in the nation. Idle hands will definitely discover that they were not wise after all. Our service for the Lord will be rewarded in due time (1 Corinthians 15:58).
